How to Incorporate Holidays into Lessons

October 9, 2024

As the holiday season is growing near, here are some things you can incorporate into your lessons to play into the seasonal spirit!

Switch your toys out to match the season.

  • EX: Pumpkins/monsters for Halloween time
  • EX: Holiday rubber ducks

Play seasonal music.

  • Check out our Spotify profile for kid appropriate playlists we've set up for you!

Pre or Post lesson crafts.

  • Swimmers can make hand turkeys, cut out and/or decorate skulls, candles, trees, etc. and either take home the craft or find a spot in your pool to hang them!
  • Don’t have a space to hang permanently? You could purchase a cork board with pins or a whiteboard with magnets to display them!
  • After the holiday season you could use the board to post announcements or other important things for your lesson.

During the winter you could host a food drive or fundraiser in the spirit of giving.

  • Whoever raises/gives the most could get a discount or a prize.

Put up LED light strands.

  • You can change the color based on the season!

Teaching skills with fun names.

  • EX: for halloween time -> we don’t want to look like zombies when we do streamline! Make sure we’re nice and tight like a rocket
  • EX: If Christmas is the pre
  • EX: for halloween time -> when getting swimmers comfortable with bobs, they could do “boo” bobs. Lower themselves down to the mouth and say “boo” into the water to practice blowing bubbles.
  • Credit: DSC Swim Lessons (This can be done with other sounds as well, but typically we call them froggy bobs)

Teaching the lifelong skill of swimming to students of all abilities is the best gift you can give them. When it comes to teaching swimmers who have an autism spectrum diagnosis, we understand that this can be challenging for the swimmer and their parent/caregiver, but also for the Swim Instructor, particularly if they don’t have experience and the right tools and strategies to complement their lesson plans. We will share advice and time-tested tips for your very next lesson. This will help you to address any underlying problems and overcome obstacles, allowing you to reach swim skill benchmarks faster and with more comfort, using the Swim Angelfish Adaptive Aquatic Methodology.

Everyone loves to see swimmers advance, ring the cowbell (or gong or whatever your program uses to celebrate), and receive a sticker on their certificate. But a speedy move up isn't always best for the swimmer. Especially if they don't have a lesson every day. Here's some ideas to keep your kiddos advancing steadily.
